Pupils compare traditional housing in northern and southern China, learning in detail about the geographic, climatic and cultural factors which underlie housing traditions, exploring how housing in different parts of China shows adaptation to the environment.

Pupils learn about folk beliefs in traditional China and how this impacts upon housing, learning how Chinese people decorated their houses to attract "fu" (good luck) and how people were influenced by the ideas of feng shui. Includes a section exploring customs, beliefs and home decorations surrounding Chinese New Year. Great for January / February - decorate the classroom!


  

Samples and Section Overview (3) : Geography Meets History - Hakka Clan Citadels

Pupils learn about the life of a Chinese minority group ("the Hakka"), learning about the giant clan citadels (tulou) in which some Hakka still live in Fujian and Guangzhou provinces and exploring how, as well as geography, these citadels reflect the group's historical experience.


  

Samples and Section Overview (4) : Folk Music of China's Regions + Audio CD

Includes companion audio CD introducing different kinds of folk music from around China. Produced jointly with Suzhou-native Fong Liu (pictured), one of the UK's leading professional Chinese singers and an expert in traditional Chinese folk music.


  

Samples and Section Overview (5) : Chinese and Scottish Clans Compared


Excting comparative study, helping students to draw comparisons across cultures, borders and times, comparing traditional clan life in China with that of the Scottish highlands. Includes enterprising taskwork, a great opportunity to develop the principles of enterprise through Social Studies teaching.
